Craft a question which students will explore (the question must relate to another curriculum area - not ICT) Hi all,
I had a conversation with Sharon today and ran our question by her and this is what she suggested: Find the names of a dozen well known figures from the gold rush and ask where they came from ... students could then write stories about them and present those stories in a range of ways.
Not all students would do all of the people - they could work in groups on two each - one male, one female.
That way students can dig deeply into all sorts of archived documents and get really stuck into an inquiry ...
It would also be really good for the implications for our classroom practice section because you'd have a lot to talk about in terms of the amount of research you'd have to do to set this up. So what do you think???
I think this gives us a plenty of scope to use IT in many ways and to address many subject areas at once. We could still do a lot of what we had already planned.
according to Murdoch and Hornsby integrated unints are best coming form investigation areas relating to sose, sceince Technology (not ict) health and PE.

Who are the people of the gold rush and where did they come from?
I feel that this opens the door up to create the following understandings of which our objectives could be drawn.

Understandings:-
People came from all over (did they) the world to start in Australia
People believed that they would "strike it rich" (I am guessing here)
Life was hard on the gold field.
Gold fields became small societies
WHAT ELSE CAN WE LOOK AT FOR PEOPLE AND PLACES.?????? - Link to maths could be making a graph of where people came from to be part of the gold rush - this could also involve using a map of the world to pinpoint where they came from (integrating geography info)
- Were the people mostly men or women? If mostly one or the other, why?
- Where did they go when they got to Australia?
- Why did they come?
- What equipment did they use?
- Living conditions on the goldfields - how do they compare to living conditions now? (My guess is that the boys would love to know about how dirty it was and how they went to the toilet...LOL) Would you like to live like that? (Literacy link - story writing - 'I came from ??? and when I got here I???' or a letter to home to tell the family about my adventures)
- How many people came to Australia?
